Lip Speaking Qualified lip speakers for all hearing impaired situations UKLS works with qualified lipspeakers who are registered with NRCPD (National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deaf/blind People) and are usually also affiliated to the Association of Lipspeakers (ALS). Our registered NRCPD lipspeakers have all passed important industry exams with many being qualified to CACDP Level 3 Certificate in Facilitating Communication with Deaf People (Lipspeaking Skills). Booking a registered lipspeaker is an assurance that your lipspeaker satisfies the necessary safe to practice standards, caries indemnity insurance and complies with the industry’s strict professional code of practice. Whatever your needs, you can always feel confident that we have the specialist expertise to assist you in communicating with individuals who are hearing impaired. How do lip speakers work? Lipspeakers work by reproducing the rhythm and phrasing of words of the speaker and may even use hand gestures and facial expressions to support communication. Sometimes the lip speaker will fingerspell words or parts of words those are difficult to lipread. Lipspeakers can also supplement their work with sign language if required to reinforce words that the lipreader may struggle to understand. For those with partial hearing, a lipspeaker may sometimes also use their own voice to facilitate accurate meaning and on occasions may also be asked to relay a deaf person’s voice. Choosing the correct level of lipspeaker for your event There are two levels of lipspeakers available depending on the speed and complexity of the work, and it is important that you understand the difference so that you make a well informed decision when booking a lipspeaker for any event, meeting, conference or social occasion. It is also worth noting that Level 3 lipspeakers, particularly in legal settings are in high demand and are often subject to limited availability. If you think you may need assistance in court or at a solicitor’s office, you should therefore try to give us at least 2 weeks notice where possible.
